Long time no posts and more importantly - We just empowered our cats!!!

So, I didn't quite catch on to writing in my blog. Nonetheless, I am intrigued by blogs and all. So, here I am with a new post - go me ;)

So, here is the news of the hour. We went out and bought new lamps today. We recently had two lamps stop working - what's the life of a lamp anyway? Anyway, we bought two touch lamps, you know the kind that you touch to turn on. I sort of projected this outcome, but I was hesitant to be certain that it would actually happen. Well, our cat just turned the lamp up. We empowered our kitties to now turn on the lights. They just walk up to it, step on it or sniff it and the light is on or turned up. Oddly this reminds me of the actions in the movie "Meet the Parents" though I promise we aren't that strange ;)

Do Americans read books?

Being an English Language Arts pre-service teacher, I naturally have many friends that read a lot. Many of my friends that are not in my field also read a lot. Books often become part of my conversations. Needless to say, I recognize that many of my future students won't read; however, besides the teacher-ly side, I am a terrible judge at guessing if Americans read books and how much they might be reading. I am also curious about how this reading question would be answered in other countries. I am interested in hearing others' opinions on this too. Here is a URL that touches the topic.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/books/181442_reading09.html

Word of the Day: Osculate

So, is anyone a fan of Balderdash?

It is this game where you receive a word and everyone comes up with a definition for the word. Then a moderator reads all of the possible words including the real definition. Everyone gets a vote on which one they think is the right definition of the word and points go to the person whose definition is selected the most and to anyone who guesses the correct definition.

At any rate, here is a great word - it's my word for today.

Osculate.

Do you know what it means? Perhaps I will tell you at the end of my entry. Your hint is that it is a verb.

Let's see what else shall be written in my journal --

latest updates. Last week, I learned how to drive a stick shift. I still need practice, but I enjoy it. My teacher was very patient and expected stalls, so yup pretty much he was an excellent teacher and we had fun. Patience and flexibility are important for teaching you know. Thanks to BG.

And my hubby got a short hair cut (reedmich) and so did I. I took off three inches in the back and I am styling a new do.

The week, despite the fact that it was supposed to be shorter, felt pretty darn long. Hurray for weekend!!

I am still in the middle of 5 books. I have much to read and summer is flitting by. And my other summer hope is that my hubby and I will get to take a little vacation together.

Oh yeah, and I am in training - or trying to be in training for a 5K run on August 8. The race is to benefit children in Africa that have HIV/AIDS. I am looking forward to it.

Ok, I better get going.

Do you know what osculate means yet?

Well, it is something you'd enjoy doing with someone that you really love.

Osculate, the verb means "to kiss".

Happy Saturday!

the queen buttercup :)

Yippie!! Three day weekend!! Due to the weekend being here and not having to get up before 6am to get to work, I got to watch movies and stay up late last night, what fun! Oh yeah, and I got to drink while watching movies :) We had fun, fun, fun!!!

To my readers... I must admit that I do not really keep up with my livejournal. I am sure that you've noticed, but I am trying. I am sure that part of my problem is that I tend to write, well, a lot. Maybe once I get over that it will help?!

At any rate, I am enjoying a weekend to relax, as well as attempt to be productive, and perhaps make it through major portions of the three books I am currently reading. I am reading Return of the King and yes, I still need to finish the LOTR -- but I love them. I am also reading Animal Farm, which my beloved hubby is also reading. I am teaching Animal Farm in the fall, so my reading of that is the "teacher reading" that includes note taking about themes, characters, teaching ideas, etc. The third book that I have been reading for a few years - which is a good and important book to read (esp if you are in the education field), it is just that I have been in classes and not been able to finish it yet - is a book by Kohn about standardized testing and the schools our children deserve. When I finish one of those I will be moving to Speak, which is a ya novel and then Seedfolks, which I will also be teaching in the fall. I enjoy reading - can you tell :)

But, we'll see how the weekend goes. I have a million plans for what I want to do and need to do. Enjoying the 4th, the weekend, and spending time at home with the hubby are at the top of the list! Happy 4th of July!

Well, it is Tuesday and I can't wait till the weekend :) A three day weekend :-) For those of you that think "yo yo yo" doesn't sound like me then I think we best be hangin out some more ;)

Book recommendation of the week...well, ok, I don't update this enough to make it a weekly thing, so book recommendation here goes

Feed by M.T. Anderson.
You'll find this one in the young adult section of the book stores. It seriously rocks. For those that enjoy sci fi - check it out, for those that enjoy a love story - check it out, for my computer geek friends - no joke it is a good read. In a very abbreviated summary (on a normal occasion, this English teacher wouldn't stand for such a summary, but hey) I'll tell ya that it follows the trend of books that explore what could happen, or rather it explores how corporations and technology influence society. And if you read it and want to chat about it, I am your gal.

Song recommendation - cuz it is so funny, "My Band" by D12 ;)

Movie recommendation - well, hey I guess I do want to see Spidey hit the screens... for now I would suggest The Princess Bride, what else? :)

I'm outta here ~
